In 1898, 'Nicholas' enlisted in the 4th New Jersey Volunteers and later 23rd Infantry, Company A, a Veteran of the Spanish American War, mustered out in 1899. Discharged in 1902, he then enlisted in the Navy, serving aboard ships going to many countries until 1909, when he returned to Trenton NJ.
He was a retired employee of the Trenton Housing Authority. Richard and Julia had three sons.
