Son of Charles Hershel & Mary Ann Greenwood Curtis.
Mr. Curtis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Springfield, where he had served as a deacon, elder and church school superintendent. He was a graduate of Jacksonville High School. He graduated from Illinois College in 1933 and did post-graduate work at the University of Illinois. He was a 56-year member of Harmony Lodge 3 AF & AM in Jacksonville. He also was a member of the Springfield Consistory and the Knights Templar. He was a 50-year member of the Springfield Rotary Club. While in Jacksonville, he founded the Jacksonville Chapter of the Order of DeMolay. Also, in 1992, Mr. Curtis received the Distinguished Service Citation from Illinois College. He was a founder and executive vice president of the Illinois State Restaurant Association in Springfield, from 1938-1961. He was assistant director of the State of Illinois School Lunch Program from 1961-1969. He owned and operated John F. Curtis Real Estate in Springfield from the mid-1960s to 1995 and for many years was very active in the Republican Party at the state and national level.
