Hugh McReynolds Willson II of Niota, Tennessee, passed away in his sleep Monday morning in his family home. Hugh, 81, was born September 20, 1925 in Merced, California.
He had entered his 50th year of employment at Citizens National Bank in Athens, where he served as Chairman & CEO. Hugh attended McMinn County High School, Columbia Military Academy, Tennessee Wesleyan College, The University of Tennessee, and The University of California at Berkeley and Davis. He was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. Hugh was a dairy farmer before he became a banker. Mr. Willson was active in his community serving as Chairman of McMinn County Bond Board, on the Board of Trustees of Tennessee Wesleyan College, on the University of Tennessee Alumni Board, the Athens-McMinn YMCA Board, as Mayor of Niota, Tennessee, a Founder of the McMinn County Economic Development Authority, a Boy Scot Volunteer, Junior Achievement Volunteer, a member of the Board of Directors of the Nashville Federal Reserve Branch and the Atlanta Federal Reserve. He was the Athens Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1964, President of the Tennessee Bankers Association in 1977, a World War II U.S. Navy Submarine Veteran and a Mason. Mr. Willson was the first banker nominated to be a Tennessee Bankers Association "Leader in Banking Excellence". He was an agent for positive change and has helped to develop many people into accomplished bankers and community leaders. Hugh's push for concerted industrial development helped our area grow through quality additions to our local economic scene.

Hugh was married 57 years to Mintie Cantrell Willson of Niota and formerly of Etowah. Other survivors include: one son, Paul G. Willson; daughter-in-law, Deb. M. Willson; grandson, Hugh M. Willson, III, all of Niota and daughter, Meredith R. Willson of Athens.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at Niota First Baptist Church in Niota, where the body will lie-in-state from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m., time of service. The family will receive friends following the service in the Fellowship Hall of Niota First Baptist Church. Interment will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday at Niota Cemetery. Pallbearers will be the Directors of Citizens National Bank. Memorial contributions may be made to: The First Baptist Church of Niota, 6 E. Main St., Niota, TN 37826 or any local charitable organization.
