Johnnie was the son of Johnny Askew and Susie Mae Askew. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He joined the Green Grove Baptist Church in Elko, Georgia. He later moved to Liberty County, Georgia where he joined the Junior Church of Christ in Sand Hill, Georgia where he was Ordained as a Deacon.

He was married to Evangelist Louisiana Grant Askew on August 30,1990.
