Richard was the son of Johnny Askew and Susie Mae Brown Askew. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He was a member of Green Grove Baptist Church in Elko, Georgia.

He was married to Lillie Mae Winslow Askew, they had 13 children, he was preceded in death by 1 son, Charles Askew.

Survivors:
9 Sons: Richard Askew Jr(Bertha), Jessie Askew(Molly Ann), Curtis Askew(Jacqueline), Elijah Askew, Joseph Askew, Kenny Askew, Tim Askew(Glynee), Christopher Askew and Nathaniel Askew Sr(Letitia).
3 Daughters: Vearnia Mae Clark, Maggie Owens(Curtis) and Gail Whitfield.
2 Brothers: James Askew and Henry Askew(Viola).
1 Sister: Essie Mae McWilliam.
5 Sisters-In-Law: Robin Askew, Mary Askew, Annie Lee Askew, Chatter Mae Farm and Irma Gene Taylor.
3 Brothers-In-Law: Jack Winslow, Julius Winslow and Rubin Winslow.
35 Grandchildren, 22 Great Grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, December 30,2003 at 1pm in the Sanctuary of Green Grove Baptist Church in Elko, Georgia with Rev Carlton Martin officiating.
