SHAW,WEST VIRGINIA -- William J. Helmick Sr., 66, Gormania, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2006, at his home.

Born on May 30, 1940, in Shaw, W.Va., he was a son of the late Joseph M. and Katie E. (Nelson) Helmick. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Kay F. (Duckworth) Helmick, in 2005; two sisters, Frances Kitzmiller and Mary Haupt; and by two brothers, Charles Helmick and Calvin Helmick.

He attended the Bayard Church of God. A retired coal minor, he was a member of UMWA Local 1444, Bayard, W.Va. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving from 1959 to 1962.

He is survived by two sons, William "Billy Jo" Helmick Jr., Warren, Ohio, and Ronald J. Helmick, Gormania; two stepdaughters, Joyce Pennington, Mt. Storm, W.Va., and Yvonne Boyland, Fla.; one sister, Shirley Kent, Gormania; one brother, Bruce Helmick, Gormania; and one grandson.

Friends will be received this evening, Thursday, Dec. 14, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Stewart Funeral Home, Oakland.

A service will be held at the Bayard Church of God on Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. William McCallister officiating. Friends may arrive one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Bayard Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by members of the various veterans' organizations of southern Garrett County.
