S. Pearl Choate, 93, Lewiston
S. Pearl Choate, a Teakean, Idaho, resident for 65 years, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2002, of congestive heart failure. She was 93.
She was born Aug. 16, 1909, at Crescent, Idaho, daughter of Charles and Alda Wells Gainer.
She moved with her family to Saskatchewan, Canada, in May 1911. Following the death of her mother, she moved back to Idaho in February 1921 to live with her uncle, George Wells. She attended school at Cavendish for half of that year, one year in Clarkston and finished school at Teakean, a community near Cavendish in western Clearwater County.
She married Orval Choate at Teakean April 18, 1926. They farmed and had a large garden, which they shared with all their neighbors. She was an avid quilter and made quilts for all family members and many friends. She belonged to Teakean Community Club and was a Sunday school superintendent at Teakean for nine years. She was a charter member of the Evergreen Grange and held many offices in that organization. She and Orval donated the land on which the log Grange hall was built, and it was later sold to the rural Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department. She was honored with a plaque from them in February 1996.
Pearl moved to Orofino in 1984 and joined the Bluebell Rebekah Lodge. She participated in Clearwater County Senior Citizens Club and First Christian Church. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1976. Her husband died in May 1982.
She moved to the Royal Plaza Retirement Center in Lewiston in August 1990.
Survivors include her three daughters, Alda McIver, Alice Damman and Agnes Vaughan, all of Lewiston; five grandchildren; one stepgrandchild; 12 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She has one sister, Opal Leslie; two half-brothers, Norman and Delis Gainer; and two half-sisters, Eileen Bilodeau and Addie Witham.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ella Pippenger, Violet Gainer and Edrie Shaw; two brothers, Clarence and Lawrence Gainer; one half-sister, Clara Pylypow, all of Canada; and two grandchildren.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Malcom's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston. The funeral is at 10 a.m. Monday at the First Christian Church, 840 10th St., Clarkston. The Rev. Clarence Howard will officiate. Burial will follow at the Teakean Cemetery.
