Ed was a veteran of World War II. He entered the Army at Fort Leavenworth on September 6, 1941 and received the Purple Heart and distinguished unit badge. He was discharged on October 11, 1945.
On August 4, 1959, Ed died in an automobile accident, along with his father, Fred Burre, Sr.,brother John Burre, and Leavenworth County Agent, Lyle Engle. Another brother, Art Burre, was injured in the accident, but survived. They were on their way to Kansas State University at Manhattan to attend a horticulture field day. The three-car accident happened about ten miles south of Wamego, Kansas. A car hit the rear of another car and ended up flipping over on top of the car carrying the Burre family.
