Original member of Company F, 108th NYS Volunteers. He was shot in the head early in the engagement while carrying the Stars & Stripes in the Color Guard. The first man to reach him was Lieutenant William Bloss, whom Goff was under the impression had struck him. When Bloss explained that he had been shot and asked if he was hurt, Goff replied that he believed he was as he could not see from his left eye. He was taken to the field hospital at Keedysville, where he lived long enough to write a letter home to his brother. He told his family that he had barely escaped with his life, but believed he would survive as long as his wounds did not become infected. Unfortunately this was not to be, and he died in the hospital. He was buried on the battlefield with several other members of the regiment.
Shortly before his regiment moved out he allegedly asked a friend to accompany him to Mount Hope Cemetery to visit the grave of his young wife. According to his friend, while standing at her grave Goff bade her farewell and told her he would never again visit her grave. The friend said that Goff was convinced that he would not return to Rochester alive, and could not be persuaded otherwise.
