GREAT BEND—Funeral service for Sister Pia Debes, 75, was Friday at Immaculate Conception Convent here.
Sister Debes, who served at St. Catherine Hospital, Garden City, for 13 1/2 years and was administrator there, died May 24 at the convent. She was born April 14, 1903, in Odin. She entered the Dominican Community on March 19, 1918, and received the habit June 1, 1919. She made her first profession May 24, 1921, and her final profession four years later. She celebrated her golden jubilee in 1971. Sister Debes began her nurse's training in 1923 and graduated in 1926. She served at St. Rose Hospital here for 19 years; at Central Kansas Medical Center for two years, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Lamed for seven years, and at St. Catherine.
She served in the capacity of administrator, assistant administrator, superior, supervisor, superintendent of nurses, and office worker. She had served at the Motherhouse since 1969 until her confinement to bed in November.
Survivors include five brothers, Walter, Avila, Ind., Otto, Ness City, Joseph, Hoisington, Anthony, San Francisco, Calif., and Lawrence, Great Bend; four sisters, Sister Emmanuel, of the convent, Aurelia Hitschmann and Tina Bachand, both of Great Bend, Laura Reif, Hoisington.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, the Rev. Leo Debes and Albert Debes, and a sister Eleanor.
Burial was at Sisters Calvary Cemetery, Great Bend. A memorial has been established at St. Catherine Hospital in honor of Sister Debes.
