Colonel David H Buel
In a dispatch from St Louis, dated last evening, it is stated that Colonel D H Buel, Commandant of the Arsenal at Fort Leavenworth, had been assassinated, on Friday night, while returning from a party at the house of General Sturgis.
David Hillhouse Buel was a son of Reverend Dr Samuel Buel, Professor of Divinity at the Episcopal Theological Seminary at Faribault, Minnesota, and a grandson of the late Judge David Buel, of Troy. He was born in Marshal, Michigan, in 1839, and graduated West Point, in the class of 1861. He was in the first battle of Bull Run, serving in the Cavalry, and was soon afterward transferred to the ordnance branch of the service. As Chief of Ordnance on the staff of General McPherson, he was with him up to the time he [McPherson] was killed in Georgia, and was taken prisoner at that time, when he [David] was sent to Macon and subsequently exchanged. He was afterward with General Sherman in his march to the sea. Since the war, and until last September, he was commandant of the Arsenal at Augusta, Maine, from which post he was transferred to the Arsenal at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He was married, in 1862, to a daughter of Surgeon McDougal, United States Army. His widow and two children survive him.
As an officer, Colonel Buel was distinguished for his bravery, ranking high in his class. During the war he sustained himself with great credit, and filled the highest positions with ability. As a man he was marked for his upright, dignified bearing, and was deservedly popular with his fellow-officers. His rank was a full Major in the Ordnance Corps, and Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel.
