The giant pandas were sent to the United States as a gift from China in June 1972, two months after President Richard M. Nixon's historical trip to Beijing, China, which helped to re-open contacts between the United States and China. At their first public appearance, an estimated eight thousand people stood in the rain from 30 minutes to an hour, just to see them. In the 20 years that Ling Ling spent at the National Zoo, an estimated 3 million people had visited her a year. On December 30, 1992, at the age of 23, Ling Ling was found dead in her cage. Her mate Hsing Hsing survived her by almost 7 years.
