In 1920, in Frederick County, he married Margaret Elizabeth Buddenhagen, daughter of Joseph and Irene Fidinger Buddenhagen. They were the parents of a son, Harmon Joseph Ahalt. Mherl passed away October 14, 1965, in Frederick, and was buried on the 16th in Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, Frederick County, Maryland.

He was a retired railroad carman, having worked for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad for 44 years. He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the Baltimore and Ohio Veterans Brotherhood Lodge 125 and the Brunswick American Legion. Surviving are his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Ahalt; one son, HarmonJ. Ahalt of Knoxville, and one sister, Mrs. Ethel G. Porter of Rosemont. Friends may call at the Feete Funeral Home in Brunswick from 7 to 10 p.m. today. Services will be held from the funeral home Saturday at 2 p.m. Rev. Ralph Miller will officiate and interment will be in the Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown."
