L. C. Ahlborn died at his home in this city, last Monday morning, June 10th, 1912, at 8:30 a.m. The news of his death came as a shock, barbed with pain and sorrow, as very few realized that his condition was serious, although he had been failing rapidly in physical health during the past few months. The cause of his death was diabetes.
..Mr. Ahlborn attended to his duties as president of the First National Bank last Friday but he did not come down town Saturday on account of the rainy weather. Early Monday morning Dr. Pearson was called in attendance but it was not considered that he was dangerous and the doctor had left the house just a few minutes before the spirit of Mr. Ahlborn took its departure.
..Louis Christian Ahlborn was born at Chambersburg, Ohio, September 23rd., 1858, and was aged at the time of his death 53 years, 8 months and 27 days. With his parents he moved to Smith county, Kansas locating near Bellaire in 1873. He worked on the farm, until with his brother, Henry, who died at Smith Center in April of this year, he engaged in the hardware business at Smith Center. He also spent a year or two in Idaho, engaged in the horse-buying business, and upon his return from Idaho he came to Kensington as one of the founders of our city. He built the first frame business building, about sixteen feet square, located where the Citizens State Bank building now stands, and there began his business career as a banker in Kensington. This was in November 1887, and ever since that time the life of Mr. Ahlborn was spent for the good of Kensington--in a business manner and socially and morally. Vain is the attempt to measure the loss of this beloved townsman; and the respect and honor that was felt for him is today depicted in the hearts of our citizens--young and old--who are mourning his sudden death.
..As a business man, Mr. Ahlborn, by his industry and honesty, was a success. He began at the bottom of the ladder and gradually and by his own efforts only, climbed to the top. He was always willing to help his fellowman and his advice in business deals was considered the best. He had served as president of the First National Bank ever since the organization of that institution and its customers always found him courteous, obliging and a man of true word.
..Mr. Ahlborn was a member of the Christian Church and the many virtues which showed forth in his life, proved that he was a true follower of the doctrine which he professed. Kindness, charity, patience and love for mankind were his every-day traits. His home was a place of pleasure for his many friends and none ever entered it without a welcome nor left it without feeling the warmth of a genuine hospitality.
..Mr. Ahlborn was married to Ruth Glenn, June 26th., 1882. Mrs. Ahlborn was the constant companion of her husband in both the business and home life during their entire married voyage and the trials they experienced, the hardships they overcame, the happiness they enjoyed, all will be beautiful memories in her life, in the years to come.
..Three sisters and one brother also survive Mr. Ahlborn. The sisters, Mrs. Day, Agenda, Kansas; Misses Ada and Lucy Ahlborn, of Kansas City, were in attendance at the funeral but the brother who lives in Idaho was unable to be present. One sister, Mrs. Ida Ahlborn Weeks, and one brother, Henry Ahlborn, preceded him in death, during the past two years.
..Funeral services were held at the Christian Church in this city yesterday afternoon and were conducted by Mrs. Clara Hazelrigg, of Topeka. Splendid tributes to the deceased were given by A. L. Drummond, of Norton, and Bro. Henry, of Burr Oak. The floral decorations sent by sympathizing friends were beautiful. Special music for the services was rendered. The Commandry of the Masonic Lodge had charge of the burial services and interment was made in the Olive Branch Cemetery.
