U.S. Congressman. He attended the private school of Dana Academy, studied law in Owego, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1817 and practiced law in Ithaca, New York, in 1821. He was District Attorney of Tompkins County, (1823-37), judge of the court of common pleas of Tompkins County in 1837, a member of the New York State Assembly, (1828-29) and president of the Village of Ithaca, (1835-36, 1839). In 1839, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1841. He was reelected to the Twenty-eighth Congress, serving (1843-45). After his term, he resumed the practice of law and engaged in banking until his death at age 75.
