John farmed the land his father had owned, in Grand River Township, Cass County. When General Order 11 was issued in 1863, all citizens of Cass County were required to leave at once. The county had become a safe haven for guerillas and bushwhackers. Gen. Grant and his generals decided it was necessary to burn every structure to the ground. John and his family went to Kentucky, returning to Cass County in 1866.
