Kelland Falknor

ELMIRA - A memorial gathering will be held June 13 for Kelland Cal "Kelly" Falknor of Elmira, who died May 16 of age-related causes. He was 85.

Falknor was born July 15, 1918, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Laurence and Lora Bonsall Falknor. He married Muriel "Cubby" Brines in Stockton, Calif., on Sept. 30, 1945.

He lived in Los Angeles before settling in this area 25 years ago.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He worked for Pacific Telephone & Telegraph for 38 years before retiring in 1979.

He served on the Veneta Library Board, the Blachly-Lane Electric Co-op Board and the Fernridge Fire Department Board. He also served as an AARP tax aide and was a longtime donor at the blood bank. He volunteered as a Heartline installer for Sacred Heart Hospital. He also served as a volunteer with Butte-to-Butte Runs and did bird counting for the Fish and Wildlife Service.

His interests included environmentalism and birdwatching. He enjoyed bridge and was an American contract bridge league life master. He also enjoyed traveling, trying new things and fixing things and making them work. He will be remembered as a devoted family man and a good provider.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Kerry of Dale City, Va., three daughters, Pamela of Malaysia, Penelope of Portland and Jennifer of Elmira; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The memorial gathering will held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 13 at the Veneta Community Center. Neptune Cremation Service in Portland is in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Veneta Library, the Cascades Raptor Center or the Audubon Society.
