From the Nashville Journal (IL), Thurs., Dec. 10 1914:

JUMPED IN WELL
Arminius B. Downes, aged 63 years, a well-known citizen of Irvington township, living 2 1/2 miles northwest of Richview, in a fit of mental aberration jumped into a well at his home Wednesday morning and was drowned. The family, consisting of Mrs. Downes and three children, on arising as usual missed the husband and father. Looking about they found his cap and coat on the porch beside the lantern which he had used while feeding stock. In the cap was a note saying, "Look for my body in the old well" (a spring well about 6 feet deep). The horror struck family hastened to the spot to discover that it was too late to save. The body was recovered and an inquest held by Coroner Dr. O. J. Hagebusch of Ashley. A verdict of suicide was rendered by the jury. Mr. Downes suffered a paralytic stroke about a year ago and has since been of unsound mind and despondent. The afflicted family has the sympathy of the community.
