Constitution-Tribune (Chillicothe, MO) - Tuesday, August 30, 2011

Deceased Name: Chris Frakes - Crash victim served Chillicothe.

One of the four people killed in the medical helicopter crash Friday, about 30 miles south of Cameron, had served as a firefighter/paramedic with the Chillicothe Fire Department from 2001 through 2007.

Local firefighters recall Chris Frakes, 36, as someone dedicated to his profession. He left Chillicothe to become a flight paramedic and had been working in that capacity with LifeNet Air Medical Services when the helicopter crashed, killing him, a flight nurse, the pilot and a patient.

The crash occurred just before 7 p.m., two miles from Mosby, where the helicopter was planned to land for refueling. The helicopter had flown from St. Joseph to Bethany to pick up the patient before heading to its destination in Liberty.

Chillicothe Fire Department Lt. Les Hinnen said he was devastated upon hearing the news about Frakes.

"He was a very highly trained paramedic and he loved his job," Hinnen said. "He was very interested in learning more about doing his job and always kept up on training."

Hinnen lived across the street from Frakes when he worked in Chillicothe, and said that he always had a good attitude toward work. He began with Chillicothe after graduating from paramedic school at Grand River Technical School.

During his time in Chillicothe, Frakes developed close-knit bonds with his fellow workers while both on the clock and off.

Chillicothe Firefighter/Paramedic Dave Gillespie was at the Chillicothe Hornet football Friday game when he heard the news about his former partner.

"He was awesome," Gillespie reflected. "He was kind-hearted, would do anything for anybody, and very intelligent. He was a very good medic. He quit here to go fly and we were proud of him."

Hinnen, Gillespie and Steve Epperson, a paid-by-call firefighter/paramedic with Chillicothe, will serve as pallbearers at the funeral, which will be in St. Joseph.

Chillicothe Fire Department backup pumper truck No. 329, the same truck on which Frakes worked while employed in Chillicothe, will carry his casket.

The Chillicothe Fire Department will also send personnel and an ambulance to St. Joseph to provide services, if needed, so that emergency personnel in St. Joseph may attend the visitation Wednesday evening and the funeral on Thursday, according to Chillicothe Fire Chief Darrell Wright. Chillicothe is sending four personnel to provide service during the visitation and six during the funeral on Thursday.

Ambulance personnel from Grundy and Linn counties, as well as Trenton Fire Department personnel, will help provide local coverage, while some of Chillicothe's personnel and equipment are out of town.

The funeral is at 1 p.m. Thursday at Word of Life Church, in St. Joseph. Visitation is at Meierhoffer Funeral Home & Crematory on Wednesday. Memorials are being made to a fund being established for nursing students at Missouri Western State University.
