BOARDMAN –Norman P. Swaney, 91, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Aug. 23, at Hospice House in Poland after a brief battle with an aggressive form of cancer.
He was born May 22, 1920, to Andrew and Stellah Meister Swaney in Canton. Raised from the age of eight on a farm near Millport in Columbiana County, he moved to Youngstown in 1938.
A veteran of World War II, Swaney was awarded several medals, including the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart while serving with the 101st Airborne Division. As part of "F" Company, 502nd Parachute Infantry Battalion, he fought in various fierce battles, most notably, the D-day Invasion of Normandy, Market Garden in Holland and the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He was captured by German forces on Jan. 3, 1945, and was a prisoner of war until liberated in April of 1945.
After returning from Europe, Swaney worked for Republic Steel Corporation as a supervisor, while studying mechanical engineering at Youngstown College. He then became field manager of construction for United Engineering and Foundry, later named Wean United, and traveled extensively with his wife and family throughout the world, while building the corporation's international steel mills, living at various times in South Africa, France, Chile, Korea, Taiwan and India.
After retiring in 1985, he became well known for his active involvement in veteran organizations, serving as Service Officer of American Legion Post 565 in Boardman and Commander of the Steel Valley Chapter 13, American Ex-POW Association. He was also State Department Commander for that organization as well as a member of the 101st Airborne Association.
His wife of 66 years, Mary Louise Edie, whom he married upon his return from World War II on July 7, 1945, died May 29, of this year. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Margery Hunter and his brothers, Martin, Norbert and John Swaney.
Norman is survived by his two sons, Mark (Allyson) Swaney, Capt., U.S. Navy (ret.) of Oxnard, Calif. and Philip Swaney of Parma Heights; his brother, James Swaney; his grandsons, Joshua (Heather) Swaney and Eric Swaney; his great-granddaughters, Alyssa, Sidney, Ainsley and Kyla Swaney; his devoted niece, Diana Edie Batta; his nephew, Joseph E. Edie; and his great-nephews, Ryan (Jennifer) Batta and Brent Batta.
Full military honors by the Ellsworth VFW Post 9571 graveside services will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery on Monday at 10 a.m.
