Johannes August Bloom, former Chisago City postmaster, passed away at his home there Monday evening, after a lingering illness at the age of 74 years, five months and five days. He had been ailing for some seven years and was seriously ill the past year.

Mr. Bloom was born in Chisago Lake Township, August 4, 1864. On June 8, 1880 he was confirmed in the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church. For a number of years he lived on the farm. In 1888 he took a 2-year course at the Northern Indiana Normal School at Valparaiso, Indiana, graduating from the business department in 1890. The same year he went to Marine on the St. Croix, employed there in a store and mill for 3 years. In 1894 the family moved to Chisago City where they have lived ever since.

On coming here he formed a partnership with his brother Mr. Alfred Bloom and started a general store in Chisago City which they operated for many years. In 1894 Mr. Bloom was appointed postmaster, a position which he held for 42 years or until 1936. he served on the village council, was the first mayor of Chisago City and held other positions of trust.

On November 12, 1892, Mr. Bloom was united in marriage to Miss Ida Jonason who survives to mourn his departure. This union was blessed with 3 children, two daughters and a son. The son Earl passed away in 1927.

Mr. Bloom first belonged to the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church, Center City, later to the Lutheran Church in Marine on the St. Croix and since 1894 he has been a faithful member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Chisago City. He has directed the choir in Marine and also the choir of the Zion Lutheran Church of which choir he was a member for many years. He was deeply interested and well versed in Music and was also a charter member of the Chisago Lake Male Chorus and of the Veteran's Male Chorus.

August Bloom was a Christian gentleman of sterling qualities. He had high principles to which he faithfully held. His faith, his kindness, his conscientious application to duty was outstanding qualities in his life. His home life was most happy.

Funeral services will be held from the Zion Lutheran Church, Chisago City, MN, Friday afternoon at 2:00 and the body will lie in state at the church from 1:00-2:00. The casket will not be opened after the service. Pastor C. E. Slatt will speak in Swedish and Pastor Constant Johnson in English. The Zion Church Choir will sing “Nearer,Still Nearer and The Great White Host.” A group of songs will be rendered by a combined Male chorus.

A tribute to Mr. Bloom will be paid either by Rev. Wenzel Bloom or by Mrs. Aner Bloom.

Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Lindstrom. Mr. Bloom is survived by the following: his wife, 2 daughters, Mabel, at home and Mildred, Mrs. Rueben Johnson, Minneapolis, one granddaughter, 3 brothers and 2 sisters, Christine,( Mrs. Rose), Marine on the St. Croix, Alfred, Chisago City, Emma, (Mrs. Strand), Marine on the St. Croix; Edward, Lindstrom, Joseph, Warroad, MN and a large number of other relatives.

Pallbearers will be, Alfred Doll, Albin Johnson, Ernest Johnson, Joseph Magnuson, Ed Melander, and Ed. L. Peterson.

Married to Ida C Johanson in 1892. He was the Postmaster of Chisago City for 8 years. He had joined the SATC at Gustavus on 5-Oct-1918 and was discharged 12-Dec-1918 during World War I. He was the Postmaster of Chisago City for 8 years. With his brother, Alfred, he was also co-owner of ‘J. A. Bloom & Bro. General Merchandise’ built-in 1892 at Railroad Avenue and Old Towne Road in Chisago City, MN.
