"For heroic achievement inconnection with military operations against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 10 June 1945.
When withering enemy machine gunfire delivered from concealed positions threatened the annihilation of his squad, Staff Sgt. Archibald courageously exposed himself to the danger in order to effectively deploy his squad. Staff Sgt. Archibald was mortally wounded during the action, but he had acted so aggressively and decisively that his squad Was able to hold its position without suffering further casualties. Staff Sergeant Archibald's actions were in the finest traditions of the Military Service.
The decoration will be forwarded to the Commanding General, Second Service Command, Governor's Island, who will select an officer to make the presentation. The officer selected will communicate with you concerning your wishes in the matter.
My deepest sympathy is again extended to you in your bereavement.
