A veteran of almost 24 years on the local police force, Captain Kent was appointed acting chief of police by Commissioner of Public Safety L. K. Barney on May 6, when Chief of Police Claude C. Russell resigned.

Commissioner Barney said shortly after advised of Kent's death, that affairs of the office of the chief of police would be directed by him until "such time as a capable man could be found for the office."

According to Captain Kent's physician, the acting chief of police suffered a sudden heart attack sometime between 9:30 and 9:40 p.m. last night and died a few minutes later. He said that Captain Kent's death was unexpected as he had not been ill recently.

He was appointed lieutenant of police on Aug. 1, 1926, and received his appointment to captain in 1930.

Commissioner Barney said he "deeply regretted Captain Kent's death" and said that he was all the citizens of Shreveport could expect in a chief of police.

"Captain Kent was experienced, and a fully capable officer. He enforced the law to the fullest extent of his knowledge and power."

In announcing the appointment of Captain Kent as acting chief of police, May 6, Commissioner Barney said: "It is fortunate that we have a man like Captain Kent to assume such responsibility.

He has given many years of faithful service and his abilities are well known."

Captain Kent is survived by his widow, one daughter, Anetha, and one brother, J. W. Kent, of Springfield, Mo., who is expected to arrive in Shreveport today.

Funeral arrangements will be announced on the arrival of his brother from Springfield. The body is being held at the Wellman funeral home.
