Major League Baseball Player. Born in Weatherford, Texas, he was nicknamed "Rip" and four-sport star athlete at Texas A&M University, when entered the Double-A Dallas Rangers baseball team in 1919. He was a right handed pitcher when he made his debut with the New York Yankees on April 19, 1920. For eleven seasons, he played with the New York Yankees (1920-21), Boston Red Sox (1922), Detroit Tigers (1923-27) and Saint Louis Browns (1929-31). He ended his career with a record of 108 wins, 82 losses, 84 complete games, 15 shutouts, 5 saves, 569 strikeouts and a 3.99 earned run average. Following his playing career Collins joined the Texas Rangers, was later elected sheriff of Travis County Texas and was police chief for the city of Bryan, Texas until 1959. He died in Bryan, Texas, at the age of 72.
