Author. He was a young schoolteacher when he published his most successful book, Seth Jones or the Captives of the Frontier, in 1860. Ellis was a major author of adventure stories during the nineteenth century era of inexpensive fiction, known as "dime novels." He wrote under dozens of pseudonyms, as well as his own name, and was so prolific, there is no complete listing of his works. His books are believed to number in the hundreds. In his later years he began writing accounts of historical events and biographies and even dissertations on his view of life. His work is still available today from various sources. Edward S. Ellis married Anna M. Deane on December 25, 1862, and they had one son, Wilmot Edward Ellis. Wilmot, a graduate of West Point, married Seddie Clark Lauderdale, granddaughter of William Clark of expedition fame and they gave him two grandchildren, Dorothy Ysidra Ellis and Edward L. Ellis. After Anna's death in 1900, Ellis married author Clara Spaulding Brown of Los Angeles on November 20, 1900. Clara was a writer in her own right in tombstone, Arizona, at the time of the shootout at the OK corral. Ellis died at Cliff Island, Maine in 1916 at the age of 76. Clara died July 1, 1935, at Mount Hebron Cemetery in New Jersey. They are buried together.
