Obituary - Captain Benjamin P. Field, USN, Retired, aged 90, Lantana, Florida, died Monday, February 1, 1999. Born in Babylon, New York on June 22, 1908, he was raised on Long Island, New York, in Miami, Florida and in Southern California before he entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Graduating from the Academy in 1931 he several tours in Asia before being transferred to the Atlantic theater of operations. Months before Pearl Harbor, he fought off German attacks on American convoys bound for blockaded Britain. During WWII, Captain Field earned a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars and numerous commendations for his actions in the North Atlantic, off the Southern Coast of France, off the Northern Coast of French-held Africa, off Sicily and off the coast of Anzio, Italy.

After the war, he served at duty stations in New Jersey, in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in San Diego, California, in Norfolk, Virginia and in Annapolis, Maryland. In 1948 he earned a Masters Degree from Stanford University. During his three tours at the Naval Academy he set up the Naval Academy sailing team. Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1961 he acquired another Masters Degree at Hofstra University and taught college and high school mathematics for twelve years before retiring a second time in 1973. At that time he and his wife Nancy (a fellow Long Islander, whom he married in 1938), moved to Lantana, Florida and devoted themselves to their gardens, yardwork and friends. Nancy preceded him in death on January 6, 1999.

Survivors include his son, Benjamin P. Field V, of Lantana, Florida and his brother, Richard Field of Marion, Ohio.

A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, February 5, 1999 at the Church of the Guardian Angels, 1325 Cardinal Lane, Lantana, Florida, with Father David Kennedy officiating. Interment will be at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery, Annapolis, Maryland, the following week. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, February 4, 1999 at Babione-Stephenson Funeral Home, 1004 S. Dixie Highway, Lantana, Florida.
