James McCarroll (1 male age 20-29), head
Mary Godfrey McCarroll (1 female age 20-29), wife
William McCarroll (2 males age 0-4), son
David McCarroll (2 males age 0-4), son
Louisa Elizabeth McCarroll Ball (1 female age 0-4), daughter
Nancy Jane McCarroll Christian, daughter (born Aug. 1830)
Dec. 20, 1849: age 22; married to Milton E. Ball, age 23, by Rev. Murrell McLain, Minister of the Gospel, at Hawkins County, TN.
On New Year's Eve, 1862, Milton's Confederate regiment left Tennessee to fight in the trenches at Battle of Vicksburg, MS in the Summer of 1863. Louisa who was pregnant, and their five children, were left at home to tend the family farm and orchards at New Canton. Wounded at Vicksburg, Milton's regiment was sent to fight at Battle of Piedmont, VA in the Summer of 1864. Wounded again, Milton recuperated at Charlottesville Hospital, Virginia.
Louisa's brother, William McCarroll and his wife Elizabeth Feagins moved briefly to Scott County, Virginia after the Civil War. Their son, David Delichia McCarroll was born Apr. 1868 in Scott, Virginia. All of William's other children were born in Hawkins, TN. Milton and Louisa Ball also lived in Scott, Virginia in Sep. 1867, when their daughter, Sarah Ball Rednour was born there.
This points to the McCarroll and Ball families being in Southwest Virginia together, likely drawn by jobs in coal mining or rebuilding railroads. By 1870 census, William McCarroll and family had moved back to Stony Point, District 7, Hawkins, Tennessee. Milton, Louisa, and children don't appear in the 1870 census but possibly remain in Virginia.
In 1900, Louisa told census taker: she had given birth to 10 children and 8 of them were still living (1 James, 2 Lewis, 3 Mary, 4 Rebecca, 5 David, 6 Mahala, 7 Sarah, 8 Emma.) Louisa said she had been married 53 years, and she was born Apr 1826 in Tennessee. Louisa said her father (James McCarroll) was born in England, and her mother (Mary Godfrey) was born in Tennessee.
