United States War of 1812 General, Continental Congressman. When the Revolutionary War began he joined as a surgeon and in 1777 was put in charge of the military hospital located in Princeton, New Jersey. Was appointed by the Delaware General Assembly as a member of the Continental Congress and served from 1783 to 1784. Served a number of years in the Delaware General Assembly. Appointed as Surgeon General of the United States Army, serving from 1813 to 1815.
