Charlotte Houtz was born Jul 31, 1834 in Perry County, Ohio and died Jul 8, 1906 in Ventura County, California at the age of 71.

She married Wesley Kenerly Helm on Oct 21, 1851 in Muscatine County, Iowa. He was the son of John Daniel Helm, Jr. and Catherine Barger. He was born Feb 27, 1822 and died Oct 30, 1871 at the age of 49. His picture is posted at www.ancientfaces.com.

The 1880 census for Iowa, Muscatine County, Seventy-Six Township (Roll 358, E.D. 252, sheet 5, line 42) lists Charlotte Helm, 45, Aunt, parents born in Pa; Wesley, 13, Cousin, born in Iowa, father born in Va, mother born in Ohio; Lilly, 11; and Edward, 9.

The 1885 state census for Iowa, Johnson County, Fremont (Roll IA1885_210, page 161, line 5) lists Charlotte Helm, age at birthday in 1884, 50, female, white, born in Ohio, parents both natives (not foreign born). She's listed with the family of John and Bertha Storm, her daughter.

In the 1900 census for Nebraska, Dixon County, Galena Township, Charlotte was living with her son Wesley Daniel Helm and his wife Clara. She was listed as "Helm, Charlotte, mother, white, female, born July 1833, widow, 1 child/1 living (!) b. OH, both parents b. PA, can read, can write, can speak English." (ED 73, p. 7A)

A Muscatine, Iowa newspaper carried this account of her life: "Settler of 1848 Has Passed Away. Mrs. Charlotte H. Helm Receives Final Summons. Came to Muscatine Before There Were any Railroads Here--At Age of 15 Years Came With Her Parents to Iowa--Reached Age of 72.

"One of the old settlers of Muscatine county and one whose coming antedated the building of railways in Iowa, passed away on Jul 8, 1906, when Mrs. Charlotte Houtz Helm departed this life in California. She died at the home of her youngest son, Edward Helm, in Ventura county, Cal, after an illness of two months. Heart failure was the immediate cause of death.

"Mrs Helm was born in Perry county, Ohio on July 31st, 1834. At the age of 15 years she moved with her parents to Muscatine county, Iowa. It was before there were any railroads and the overland trip was one fraught with the hardships of the early days. Her marriage to Wesley Helm occurred in October, 1851. Twelve children were the issue of this union. Five, together with her husband, have preceded her in death.

"Seven children survive, they being Mrs. Ella Fletcher of Mars, Nebraska; Mrs. John Storms, of Comesville, Muscatine county, Iowa; Mrs. Molly Dempster, of Manilla, Iowa; Mrs. Georgia Vennink of Vail, Iowa; W. D. Helm, at Laurel, Nebraska; Mrs. Lillie Huke, of Riverside, Cal.; and Edward Helm of Camarillo, Cal.

"Mrs. Helm united with the M. E. church at an early age and was a consistent member or the church, all through life. The Interment was made in the beautiful Evergreen cemetery at Riverside, Cal."

The cemetery is located at 4414 14th Street, telephone 909-683-1840. Her stone is located on 13th Street, midway between Pine and Redwood Drive. She was buried in plot 83-I on Jul 10, 1906. The stone reads, "Mother Lottie Helm 1834 - 1906."

The certificate of death for Mrs Charlotte Houtz Helm is recorded in Ventura County, California. The certificate has two numbers: 67-403 and 6-018201. It shows her residing at the time of death as one year at the place of death and four years in California. The informant was Thomas E. Helm of Camarillo. It listed her date of birth as 1835, and age at death 72. Cause of death was mitral disease from arthro sclerosis. Parents were listed as Leonard Houtz and Sarah Whitmer, both born in Pennsylvania.
