LOCKPORT — Funeral services for former Lockport High School basketball great Willie Haynes will be in held in both New York City and Lockport, Willie's older brother, David, another LHS cage great, announced Friday. Burial will be at Cold Spring Cemetery.
Willie Haynes, 43, died of cancer in New York City this week.
David Haynes said Lockport calling hours for his brother are from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Prudden & Kandt Funeral Home, 347 Genesee St.
Funeral services are slated for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Friendship Baptist Church, 5662 Saunders Settlement Road.
Burial will be at Cold Spring Cemetery on Chestnut Ridge Road.
Haynes will be inducted into the Lockport High School Athletic Wall of Fame next month. David Haynes said members of the Haynes family will proudly attend on Sept. 24.
A standout athlete at both LHS and St. Peter's College, Willie Haynes was among both institution's highest scorers.
Under head coach Dick Crossett, Willie led the cage Lions to the playoffs in their 1984-1985 season, while setting a new career scoring record at LHS with 1,266 points. His scoring average of 28 points per game was one of the highest in Western New York, while he also established a school record single-season scoring mark of 49 points against Lafayette at the annual Rotary Boys Basketball Tip-Off Tournament.
Haynes went on to a stand-out basketball career at St. Peter's College in Jersey City, N.J., where he was described as one of the school's greatest pure shooters in history.
He set a Saint Peter's career scoring mark of 1,730 points and still ranks third on the school's all-time scoring list, behind Keydren Clark and Ricky Bellinger. He also earned All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors in each of his four seasons, three times as a second team honoree (1986, 1987 and 1988) and once as a First Team recipient (1989). In his final year at St. Peter's, Haynes was nominated for the prestigious Haggerty Award.
Willie was also named to the MAAC All-Tournament team in 1989. During his four year career at St. Peter's, the Peacocks won 79 games, 40 in the MAAC and won the 1986-87 MAAC regular season championship. In his senior year, he was credited with hitting the game-winning shot in nine of the Peacocks' 22 wins.
Haynes was ultimately named to the All-MAAC team of the 1980s, as part of the league's 25th anniversary.
Remembered as a brilliant student/athlete, earning MAAC All-Academic honors three times and Academic All-American honors twice, Haynes graduated from Saint Peter's with a 3.65 grade point average.
