William Ruperd was the son of John Bell Ruperd (b.1832-d.1900) and Elizabeth Lover (b.1834-d.1889).

William was born on 18 Jan 1877 in Williams County, Ohio.

He married Priscilla Delora Waldron (b.1861-d.1931) on August 26, 1877 in Ferris, Michigan. They divorced in 1906. Court documents show William "commenced a course of unkind, harsh and cruel treatment towards" Priscilla. He was described as being a "man of great austerity of temper" who, during the marriage, "indulged in violent sallies of passion," and was verbally abusive using "very profane obscene" language.

William and Priscilla had 6 children that can be proved (they are linked to this page). The 1900 Census shows the couple had 7 children (and 5 were living at the time). Lucy had died in 1886 and the 7th child is Lilly Ethel (b.1895-d.1895). No obit or death certificate has been found for Lilly.

William, who worked as a common laborer/farmer and perhaps in the logging industry, was apparently a man of action and had his own sense of justice. He was arrested in 1905 after fatally shooting Henry Knight, the lover of his daughter Emma Ruperd Ogden. Emma ran away with Mr. Knight and when they returned, Mr. Knight shot dead her husband, Fred Ogden, and one shot struck Emma's hand. William killed Mr. Knight in return. In September 1905, William Ruperd (my 2nd-great-grandfather) was acquitted of murder after a trial in Roscommon County court. I checked with the clerk's office and they said there are no records of the trial or case.
