U.S. Senator. He was a member of the Massachusetts State House of Representatives (1803 to 1804), graduated from Middlebury College Vermont, in 1807, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Northampton, Massachusetts. He was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1808 to 1810, 1813) and a member, Governor's council, in 1816. In 1816, he was elected to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Christopher Gore, serving until 1818. He was the father of U.S. Congressman George Ashmun.
