James Alsop was born 18 Dec. 1853 in New Harmony, Indiana, the son of Walter Wilson Alsop and wife Lucy Ann Alsop. He married on 28 Feb. 1872, Rebecca Columbine "Bina" Brooks and they were the parents of six children. Two of the children died as infants and the other four lived to be adults. They only had one son who lived to adulthood and he was named Walter Wilson Alsop after the father of his father. James Alsop was in poor health for a year before his death on 25 Feb. 1920, which occurred at Poseyville, Indiana. He was a member of the Grayville, Illinois Presbyterian Church and was buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery at New Harmony. At the time of his death, he had one son and three daughters still living.
