Spirit Lake – Services were held Saturday at the Donovan-Leyson Funeral Home in Spirit Lake for Mrs. Roy (Bessie) Broadie. She died Wednesday, June 8, 1985 at Spirit Lake. Interment was in East Side Cemetery at Estherville.

Bessie Prather was born July 8, 1898 in Polk County, Iowa, the daughter of Mary Evelyn and Danie Wilson Prather. [Daniel William and Mary Evaline Callaway Prather] As a young girl she moved to the Ruthven area where she grew up. On Dec. 16, 1915 she was united in marriage with Roy Francis Broadie and the couple spent their working years farming in the Ruthven, Estherville and Spirit Lake areas. She continued to maintain her farm home after her husband’s death in 1968. In 1977 she moved into Spirit Lake. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survivors include two sons Harlan of Dunedin, Fla. and Maurice of Spirit Lake; four grandchildren; two sisters: Mrs. Cleo Waterman, Gladstone, Mo. and Mrs. Dorothy Pitcher, Los Gatos, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers; two sisters and one granddaughter. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 2, 1985)
