Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Henry Harnden fought in the Mexican-American War, and in July 1861 enlisted in the Civil War as a private in Company D, 1st Regiment, Wisconsin Cavalry. Rising through the ranks, he served as captain from 1862 to 1864, major from 1864 to 1865, and for a short time was lieutenant colonel before being brevetted colonel on March 13, 1865. In May 1865 he led one of the parties pursuing fleeing Confederate President Jefferson Davis, being in on the capture May 10, 1865 near Irwinsville, Georgia. Wounded several times during the war, he also lost at least two horses. Nominated by President Andrew Johnson, he was brevetted brigadier general on March 12, 1866. After the war he settled in Madison, Wisconsin, where he served a term in the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1866, and was US Collector of Internal Revenue from 1873–1883. He served as Department Commander of the Wisconsin GAR from 1899 until his death.
