Scarlet Lawrence Akins touched the lives of many. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife and mother. She gave her time, attention and love to family and friends. As a profession, her first love was teaching and she gave her love of learning to her students.

Scarlet was diagnosed with melanoma in April of 2006 and she passed from this earth on August 4, 2006. After her death the Scarlet Lawrence Akins Foundation was founded by her parents and husband. The Foundation educates others about the dangers of Melanoma and it sponsors the annual Pale is the New Tan 5k Run in Memphis, TN. Beyond the role of education the Foundation also lends support to those who find themselves diagnosed with Melanoma.

In addition to raising public awareness of this deadly type of cancer the Foundation contributes money to researchers in order to help find a cure for Melanoma.
