Scarlet was diagnosed with melanoma in April of 2006 and she passed from this earth on August 4, 2006. After her death the Scarlet Lawrence Akins Foundation was founded by her parents and husband. The Foundation educates others about the dangers of Melanoma and it sponsors the annual Pale is the New Tan 5k Run in Memphis, TN. Beyond the role of education the Foundation also lends support to those who find themselves diagnosed with Melanoma.
In addition to raising public awareness of this deadly type of cancer the Foundation contributes money to researchers in order to help find a cure for Melanoma.

Scarlet lost her brave battle against Melanoma, a cancer that may have taken her body, but never touched her spirit. Scarlet's courage, generosity, humor, and passion for life will continue to impress upon the lives of countless friends, family and students forever.
Scarlet was the beloved wife of Jody, devoted mother of Madison Grace and adored daughter of Cheryl & Vann Moore & Steve and Vicki Lawrence. She was both a big sister & best friend to Reese T.
