Arthur J. Luce Dies at Amherst
Amherst, Wis., March 22--Arthur J. Luce passed away at his home on Main street Saturday, at 2 o'clock, after a long illness. While his passing away had been expected for some time past, the report of his death was a great shock to the community.
Mr. Luce had been a resident of Amherst and vicinity for the past 40 years and for a number of years was an extensive dealer in horses, operating a livery farm during a long period. Later he moved onto a farm near town on account of the failing health of Mr. and Mrs. Luce. They disposed of the farm and moved into a comfortable house on South Main street, where death occurred.
Arthur J. Luce was one of a family of nine children, born September 1, 1852, to James R. Luce and Esther M. Pooler. He was born at Janesville, Rock Co., Wis., and when a small lad the family moved to Stevens point, where Arthur grew to manhood. At the early age of 11, he had developed a love and knowledge of horses that he rarely found in one of that age, and the story goes that he had earned and was the owner of his first team of horses at the age of 14. He did extensive branding and driving in his teens and was considered a most reliable driver.
Mrs. Luce passed away July 8, 1926, and the Luce home has since been under the care of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Toble, old friends of the family. almost two years ago Mr. Luce developed what was later found to be cancer of the tongue. He steadily grew weaker and it soon became evident to his family and friends that the was not far off. The immediate family consisted of one son, Homer Luce of Chicago, and one daughter, Mrs. Edith Shield of Rhinelander; one sister, Mrs. Stella Frost of Madison, and two brothers in the west, Henry and Herbert Luce, whose addresses are not known. One brother, Lewis Luce, passed away March 12 in Washington, but at the time Arthur Luce was so low, that he was not informed of his brother's death.
Funeral was to be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock at the M.E. church with Rev. Wesley Perry of Evanston, Ill. Officiating. Interment was to be made in Greenwood cemetery.
The relatives from out of town who are here for the funeral are Mr. and Mrs. Homer Luce, Chicago, Mrs. Edith Shield, Rhinelander, Mrs. Stella Frost, Madison, and Mr. and Mrs. Wallie Courtright of Deerbrook, Wis., and Raymond Toble, of Platteville.
