Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War as Lieutenant Colonel of the 13th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services at the battles of Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, and Ringgold Gap". After the War he served as the United States Consul in Bangkok, Siam from 1869 to 1876.
