Mrs. Annie Allen Died in Atlanta.
The remains of Mrs. Annie McLemore Allen, who died in Atlanta of acute kidney trouble at the Davis Fisher Sanitarium Friday night, were brought to LaFayette and carried to the Colonel McLemore residence, her childhood home. The funeral was at the Methodist Church Sunday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by Rev. W. B. Hope, and she was laid to rest beside her husband the late David G. Allen, in the lot where each grave had for years received her personal care. The pallbearers were Messrs. Charles and Lee Griffin, Charles Torbert, Judge C. E. Fuller, R. G. Simpson, W. R. Chatfield.
The news of the death of Mrs. Allen was a shock and sorrow to all LaFayette and community. She was born and reared here; her happy married life was spent here, where she reared her noble, manly son, David G. Allen, now of Memphis, Tenn., and two splendid daughters, the late Mrs. W. R. Battle (LeMerle Allen) and Mrs. Clifford Oxford (Norma Allen), of Atlanta, Ga.
For years Mrs. Allen was a power for good in her town and county. Her influence was broad and she used it wisely. She was a woman of munificent charity and she made no distinction in giving. She was a leader in church work, for years was president of the Woman's Missionary Society and from girlhood a teacher in the Sunday school.
She was an able president of the U.D.C. and during her presidency the chapter placed the headstones at the soldiers' graves in the city cemetery.
Mrs. Allen was of the proudest of Southern aristocracy on both her father's and mother's lines. She was a daughter of Col. J. J. McLemore and granddaughter of Charles McLemore. Her family descended from MacCallum Moore, Duke of Argyle, who came down from Robert Bruce, of Scotland. Her mother was Sophronia Gunn Driver, of the F.F. V. of the Old Dominion state. Bringing her remains to stay a while in her beloved home, now the residence of her sisters, Mrs. D. A. Holmes and Miss McLemore, and then to sleep by those she loved were her son, David G. Allen, of Memphis, Tenn.; and daughter and grandson, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Oxford, and Clifford Oxford, Jr.; grandsons, William and David A. Battle, of Atlanta; sister and brother, Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Baugh, and niece, Elizabeth Christopher, of Savannah, Ga.; and nephew, Robert L. Baugh, Jr., of New Orleans, La. Besides these surviving her are her sisters, Miss McLemore and Mrs. D. A. Holmes; grandsons, Laurie and Jean Allen Battle, of Memphis, Tenn.; Mrs. Harry Truchetutts, of Savannah, Ga.; Mrs. James Powell, of Birmingham, and Mrs. Charlie DeLoach, of Brooklyn, N. Y., who have the sympathy of friends in their bereavement.
