Rhoda was the eighth of ten children born to Samuel Cady and Elizabeth Winter of Killingly, Connecticut and Shutesbury, Mass. She was married in Shutesbury on 12 May 1787 to Robert Allen, the son of Joseph Allen and Hepsibeth Coffin. The family moved from Shutesbury to Wallingford, Vermont in 1806. She and her husband were members of the East Wallingford Baptist Church. They had eight children.
