Benjamin Troutman, son of Peter and Mary Barbara was born August 7, 1780 and moved with his parents to Somerset County, Pa in 1790. In 1807 he was apprenticed to George Rizer, gunsmith. The indenture reads as follows: "I Benjamin Troutman, have put myself voluntarily as an apprentice to the gunsmithing business to George Rizer of the Town of Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland, from November 27, 1807 to the end of one full year. Here the usual terms of compliances are stated for the apprentice and the master." Signed by Ben Troutmanand George Rizer.
The William Bowers' "Gunsmiths of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia" shows Benjamin could produce rifles of top quality The writer has seen two that were masterpieces of the gunsmiths art. They embodied all the good details of carving, silver inlays and good balanced design. His work closely resembles that of Hampshire County, Virginia gunsmiths He was one of our great gunsmiths."

He worked late in the Golden Age, but was still very much a Golden Age craftsman. The gun in the copy I am enclosing, made by him is an outstanding example of American high art arms making and I would venture a guess that it would sell far in excess of $15,000 and maybe as high as $25,00." Benjamin was a fair musician, as we find the following: "In 1808 a fair was held in Berlin. There was fiddling and dancing from morning til night and from night til morning. Among the fiddlers were John Lane, Peter Lane and Benjamin Troutman from Southampton." Benjamin Troutman was taxed as a gunsmith in 1810, 1811 and 18l2 in Somerset County, Southampton Township, Pennsylvania. He married, about 1812 Catherine Wolgerman, probably,in Maryland. She was born 1795 in Maryland. The estate settlement of Benjamin Troutman dated February 6, 1863 shows he had "the following children:
