Alice Gordon Abbett was often referred to by friends as the "last debutante." She had a successful career, enjoyed entertaining, and was involved in numerous charities.

Born and raised in Shadyside, she was one of two daughters of Allen Taylor Caperton Gordon and Alice Walton Scully Gordon. Her father was a well-known attorney.

Alice was introduced to society at the Cinderella Ball and, in later years, was involved with the committees that planned the ball,
a major fundraiser for St. Margaret's Hospital.

She attended the Ellis School in Shadyside, Miss Porter's School in Farmington, Connecticut; and received her undergraduate degree from Briarcliffe College in Long Island, New York.

Alice was employed as a writer for the New Yorker Magazine, and later taught primary grades at Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh. She served on the Board of St. Margaret's Hospital, was active with the Altar Guild at Calvary Episcopal Church, and was committed to numerous charitable endeavors, including Animal Friends.

She was a fine tennis player, golfer, and bridge player, and enjoyed the Rolling Rock Races in Ligonier, Pennsylvania.

Alice passed away at home on Saturday, June 24, 2006. She is survived by her son, Taylor Gordon Abbett; his wife, Teriangela; and a granddaughter, Alexis Faith. She is also survived by her niece Allison Lang, and two nephews, Paul and Gordon Steele. She was predeceased by her parents and by her sister, Ann Caperton Gordon Steele.

Arrangements were by, and Visitation was at, John A. Freyvogel and Sons Funeral Home, 4900 Centre Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Funeral Liturgy was celebrated on Friday, June 30, 11 a.m., at Calvary Episcopal Church, 315 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 (Shadyside), Dr. Harold T. Lewis, Rector, presiding. A reception followed at the Pittsburgh Golf Club.
