U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, was a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives, (1850-52), a member of the Michigan State Senate, in 1856 and a delegate to the Loyalist Convention at Philadelphia, in 1866. In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth, Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving until 1871. He was then elected to the United States Senate, serving (1871-83).
