Charles J Bloom of Center City Dies Funeral on Sunday

Charles J Bloom native born resident of Franconia township and well known throughout the Center City community died at Bethesda Hospital in St Paul early last evening agter a three week illness with kidney trouble. He was 72 years of age and had been a patient at the hospital since December 31. His passing occurred about 6 pm yesterday. funeral services will be conducted in the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church at Center City next Sunday afternoon at 2:00 in the Chisago Lake Cemtary. Mr Bloom in survived by his wife ,nine children, five children survive five brothers, four sisters and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Impressive funeral services were conducted at Center City last Sunday afternoon over the remains of Carl J. Bloom, 72 year old resident of that community who passed away on the previous Wednesday at the Bethesda Hospital in St.Paul. Dr. A. N. Nelson officiated at the burial rites which opened at the family home east of Center Cit at1:30 pm and the Chissago Lake Lutheran Church r 2:00. They were largely attended, large numbers of relatives and friends of the deceased filling the large church auditorium nearly to its utmost.

Two hymns were sung by the ladies chorusof the church, while solos were sung by Theodore H. Stolberg and Mrs.J A. Wallin. The funeral casket was surrounded by floral bouquets snd beautiful designs contributed by relatives and friends of the departed. Pallbearers were 6 nephews as follows: Chester, Ellis, Gilbert Bloom, Russell and Arnold Jonason.

Cancer of the Kidneys caused Mr.Bloom's death, after an acute illness of little more than 3 weeks. Although failing slightly in health last summer and fall he was up and about his home and did not become ill until on Christmas Eve.A physician was summoned and a week later he was removed to the Bethesda Hospital in St.Paul.

The cause of his sickness had not been determined and an operation was decided upon by physicians there. His condition had become soweakened, however that it was feares he could not withstand the shock. He remained conscious until 2 days before the end, which came peacefully at 6 pm Wednesday, January 15.

Carl Johan Bloom was born on May 9, 1857 on the old homestead of his parents in franconia township, about 4 miles south of Center city. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gustaf Bloom, who had settled on the sasme tract of land later occupied by the deceased and now farmed by the latter's son G. Elmer Bloom.

When only a young man he left home and for a few years operated the John G. Rose farm near Scandia. He returned and in 1884 was united in marriage to Helena Jonason. They made their home on the Bloom farm and resided there until last year when they retired from the farm and moved to the present home only a short distance east of Center city.

The deceased was baptized in the Chisago Lake Church by Rev Hedengren, one of the first pastors of that congregation and was also confirmed there. He remained a faithful member and servant of the church all of his life. For a number of years he served on the board of deacons.

A lover of music, he sang in the church choir for thirty years. he was also fond of flowers and spent practically the last 3 years of his life caring for flowers.

Mr. Bloom was also active in civic affairs, establishing a record of 43 consecutive years of service as treasurer of Franconia Township. He was county commissioner of his district for 8 years besides serving terms as school district clerk.

Left to mourn are his sorrowing widow, five sons, four daughters, thirteen granchildren, six brothers, 2 sisters,a large number of other relatives and a wide circle of friends. The children are: PasulBloom of Center city, William Bloom, Taylors Falls; G. Elmer Bloom, Center City; Wendel Bloom, Minneapolis, Oliver Bloom, Marine-on-the- St. Crooix, Mrs Chesterr Tvedt, Minneapolis, Mrs. Arthur Walcholz, Alden, Minnesota; Adelia Bloom of St.Paul; and Lucille Bloom residing at home. Another son died when he was only 14 years of age.

The brothers and sisters are: Alfred Bloom, J. August Bloom and E. A. Bloom, all living in Chisago City; Frank Bloom, Lindstrom, David Bloom, county register of deeds, Center City, Joseph Bloom, Warroad, Minnesota,Mrs. John G. Rose, Boston, Massachusetts and Mrs. Chas. Strand, Marine-on-the-St. Croix.
