U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Franklin, Pennsylvania. He was justice of the peace for Franklin, Pennsylvania, when elected as a Free Soil candidate to the Thirty-first Congress and reelected as a Whig to the Thirty-second Congress, serving (1849-53). After leaving Congress, he moved to New York and practiced law until his death.
