NILES - Lillian P. Allen, age 90 years, of Louis Street in Niles, Michigan, died at 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 1, 2011, at Brentwood Assisted Living Community in Niles of an extended illness. Mrs. Allen was born on May 20, 1921, in Bangor, Michigan, to Frank and Rosa (Mala) Pikal. She lived most of her life in this area, having spent from 1967 thru '93 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She was formerly employed at Southern Bell Telephone and Peabody Advertisement, both in Fort Lauderdale, and Paul's Toggery, Inc., in Niles. Lillian was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles and Niles Peacemakers Club. She was active at the Niles Senior Center. She was an avid quilter and made over 23 quilts in her lifetime. On January 1, 1942, in Bangor, she married Bernard C. "Bernie" Allen, who preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1996. Mrs. Allen is survived by their children, Barbara Leaver of Niles, Don (Judy) Allen of Murphy, North Carolina, and Larry Allen of Niles; grandchildren, Andrea Bales and Stacy (Steve) Chapman, both of Atlanta, Georgia, and Jeffrey Hoese of South Bend, Indiana; great-grandsons, Alec Bales, Christopher Grant Chapman, all of Atlanta; and her sister, Frances Pikal of Bangor. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Rose Groth. Funeral services for Lillian P. Allen will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 8, 2011, at Halbritter Funeral Home in Niles, with Rev. Edward H. Slate of Wesley United Methodist Church officiating. Committal services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday at Hill Cemetery in Lawrence, Michigan. The family will receive relatives and friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Contributions in memory of Lillian may be made to the Southern Care Hospice, Inc., 4341 South Westnedge Avenue, #2100, Kalamazoo, MI 49008.
