Volney was, the youngest of 3 children, born to Stephen and Sally [Ellis] Leavitt. The oldest child died before age 2 in 1829. The other child was his brother Milton Leavitt 1839 - 1923.
Volney enlisted 16 Sep 1864 as a Corporal in Co.A, 29th Maine Infantry Regiment. He was killed just over a month later. He never married but before leaving for war, carved the initials of his sweetheart in a tree that is still standing (in 1999) on the orignal Leavitt Farm where the cemtery is, on Old Leavitt Rd.
