Canandaigua - The body of Guy M. raines Jr, 26, who died in action with the US Marines at Iwo Jima, Mar 13, 1945, will arrive in Canandaigua tomorrow on the 8:06 train from Schenectady.
A military detail from the Canandagua Veterans Council will escort the body to the Curilce Funeral Home in N. Main St. where funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:30 pm. The Rev. Richard H. Bowen, pastor of the First Congregational Church will officiate and burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Son of former City Clerk and Mrs. Guy M. Raines, 210 Chaplin St., Lieut Raines was killed when his plane was shot down over enemy territory at Iwo Jima. He was then serving as a tactical and gunnery observer with an observation squadron of the 13th Marines, 5th Marine Division.
He enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in June 1941 and trained at Parris Island S.C.; Quantico VA, and New River N.C. Following combat training he attended Officer Training School at Quantico and was commissioned Second Lieutenant Jan 12, 1944. At Quantico he was a member of the pro basketball team and also manager and played on the Championship Aircraft Warning Company Signal Battalion team at Camp Lejeune NC.
Lieutenant Raines was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for 33 missions Mar 8 to 13, 1945; the Purple Heart and Air Medal with two stars for 15 observation missions March 1 to 8 1945, all with accompanying citations.
Lieut Raines was born Aug 27, 1918 in Rochester and came to Canandaigua in his early youth. He attended the local schools and also at Oberlin College and Miami University in Ohio.
Surviving besides his parents are his widow, the former Barbara Wfight, Rochester, who has since remarried, two sisters and one brother; also two nieces and a nephew.
