In the early 1840's Pierre managed the warehouse of his family's "American Fur Company". Captain Pierre Menard Chouteau commanded the steamship "A. B. Chambers" on the Missouri River from the late 1840's to the 1860's, when the railroads greatly diminished river commerce. After-wards he was elected Treasurer of Kansas City for several terms.

He married Mary Ann Polk on December 20, 1849.
