Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol battled rushing water and extreme heat as they searched for the body of a missing colleague and his patrol dog who they believe were swept away by floodwaters in the state's northwest.
Trooper Fred Guthrie Jr., 46, # Badge Number 1322, of Platte City, and his K-9, Reed, were patrolling flooded land Monday near Big Lake when they disappeared. They were last seen when flood workers broke for lunch, said Sgt. Sheldon Lyon, a highway patrol spokesman.
The patrol said early Tuesday that nearly a dozen people are involved in the search _ now considered a recovery mission. Lyons said the troopers are determined to find their colleague.
"When it's somebody you know, it makes it very difficult," Lyon said. "It makes the urgency so much more. We have to find this trooper."
Guthrie's still-running truck, with a trailer attached, was found Monday on Missouri 118 northeast of Big Lake, an area that has been inundated by floodwaters from the Missouri River since June. The crew focused their efforts near a field near the highway still covered by fast-moving water.
"It's moving in some places, with a very, very strong current," Lyon told WDAF-TV. "That makes it hazardous and a life-threatening situation for folks to get around."
Guthrie joined the Missouri State Water Patrol on Jan. 2, 1994 and transitioned to trooper with the merger to the Highway Patrol on Jan. 1, 2011, where he has served in the Water Patrol Division within Troop A serving Platte County.
Guthrie served in the Water Patrol Division within Troop A in Platte County. In 2007, he was honored for rescuing a woman who was clinging to a buoy in Smithville Lake after being thrown from her boat during a thunderstorm.

He received numerous awards for the act of heroism he performed on June 22, 2007, during a severe storm at Smithville Lake. Those awards included Missouri Department of Public Safety Employee of the Month in both June 2007 and November 2007, Missouri State Employee of the Month - December 2007, Northwest Missouri Law Enforcement Award for Valor - Gold Award - 2007, State of Missouri Medal of Valor - 2007, Missouri State Water Patrol Distinguished Service Citation for Valor – February 2008, National Association of State Boating Law Administration (NASBLA) "Missouri Boating Law Enforcement Officer of the Year" - July 2008. On Nov. 18, 2011, he was awarded a posthumous "Officer of the Year" award by the Metropolitan Chiefs and Sheriffs Association, for his ultimate sacrifice on Aug. 1, 2011, while patrolling flood waters in Holt County.

He was a baseball coach in the Mid-Continent baseball league where he was the coach of his son's baseball teams. He coached youth basketball for the West Platte Youth Basketball program, coaching the teams for both his boys as well as his daughter. He also helped assist in coaching a traveling basketball team, The Midwest Mavericks, for his daughter Amber. He was residing as the Vice President of the Quarter Back Club at West Platte High School. Trooper Fred Guthrie was very outgoing and enjoyed meeting and visiting with new and different people.
He had an enjoyment of life that will be passed on to his children. He had a love of the outdoors that included hunting, fishing, and trapping, all of which he enjoyed doing with his family and friends.
He was very active in his children's activities and could always be heard at their sporting events cheering them on. There are several adults and children alike that are sporting a nickname handed to them by Fred. He was greatly loved and will be missed, but not forgotten.
He was preceded in death by his partner, K-9 Reed, as well as his maternal and paternal grandparents.
Survivors are his wife, of the home; three children, Amber Guthrie, Dylan Guthrie, Cody Guthrie, all of the home; parents, Independence, Mo.; two sisters, Wendy Viers, Greenwood, Mo., Kerri Guthrie, Independence; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and a great niece.
